The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa, closer to Morocco and the continent of Africa than Spain and Europe. They offer a diverse range of attractions from stunning beaches to volcanic landscapes and vibrant cities with culture. Here’s our little overview of the islands:
The Canary Islands consist of seven main islands, but the most popular 4 to visit are numbers are listed below, which are also the islands we have visited so far:
- Tenerife: Home to Spain’s highest peak and active volcano Mount Teide, as well as popular tourist resorts like Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos full of bars and nightlife. It is also home to the number 1 rated waterpark in the world Siam Park.
- Lanzarote: Famous for its lunar-like landscapes shaped by volcanic eruptions, Timanfaya National Park, and unique architecture by artist César Manrique. Another popular choice for sun seeking Brits looking for sun and nightlife.
- Gran Canaria: Known for its diverse landscapes, including sand dunes of Maspalomas, lush forests, and historic towns like Vegueta in Las Palmas. Kelly actually visited Gran Canaria several years ago to perform at Pride Maspalomas, one of the biggest Gay Pride events in Europe.
- Fuerteventura: Renowned for its pristine beaches, ideal for windsurfing and kiteboarding, as well as its charming villages and natural parks. A must visit is Chipmunk beach, home to hundreds of chipmunks who have bred here in recent years.
Activities:
- Beach Relaxation: Being volcanic islands, the Canary Islands have a unique black tinge to their sand. But for golden sands and crystal-clear waters, visit the beaches of Playa del Inglés (Gran Canaria), Playa de las Teresitas (Tenerife), and Playa de Cofete (Fuerteventura).
- Outdoor Adventures: Explore volcanic landscapes, perfect for hiking, beautiful national parks, and water sports like surfing, windsurfing, and diving.
- Cultural Exploration: Historic towns, museums, and cultural sites give an insight to the islands’ rich history, indigenous Guanche culture, and colonial heritage.
- Wine Tasting: Sample local wines, especially Malvasía a local favourite, and visit the vineyards on the islands of Lanzarote and Tenerife.
- Whale Watching: Take a boat trip to spot whales, dolphins, and other marine life off the coast of various islands, particularly in Tenerife.
- Cuisine: Try the Canarian cuisine, featuring fresh seafood, mojo sauces, papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes), and traditional dishes like ropa vieja and gofio. Yum!
- Nightlife: All of the islands offer an array of nightlife with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. Live bands, singers, tribute acts and comedians are just a few of the acts you can expect to see in the plentiful bars and clubs of the Canary Islands!
Practical Tips:
- Getting around: Renting a car is the best way to explore the islands as you can get round each island within a day if you want to, although there are also public buses, and ferries connecting the islands.
- Weather: The Canary Islands enjoy warm weather year-round, making them an ideal destination for sun-seekers even in the winter. Just 4 hours from the UK, it’s a no brainer for winter sun!
We look forward to going back to the Canary Islands soon for some winter sun, fabulous food and live music!
